A coalition of pro-abortion groups planned to launch their advertising campaign today. The draft ad from the group, called IndependentCourt.org, mentions Alito's letter.
In the commercial, the announcer says, "The right wing has already taken over the West Wing. Don't let them take over your Supreme Court."
The Alliance for Justice, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights and the People for the American Way are the leaders and primary financiers of the campaign, according to CongressDaily.
They plan to run the ads on national cable networks and on local stations in certain states. Their goal is to target three pro-abrotion Republicans, Sens. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island and Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine.
Meanwhile, the Committee for Justice, which supports Alito's nomination, on Wednesday announced it will launch an ad campaign in seven states questioning the groups opposing the nomination.
Their ad targets PFAW for supporting partial-birth abortions, according to a Washington Times report. The ad mentions Alito's qualifications and will be run on both television and radio in states that voted for President Bush in 2004 but have a Democratic senator, Sean Rushton, executive director of the group, said.
On the pro-abrotion side, NARAL is also running a television ad against Alito and Nancy Keenan, the group's president, told the Associated Press that it is "a coordinated grassroots effort to expose Alito's legal philosophy, which does not protect core liberties, such as a woman's constitutional right to choose."
confirmed, Alito, who currently serves on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court
of Appeals, would replace outgoing pro-abortion Justice Sandra Day
